Post-Identification Support Programme

A 5-session, neuro-affirming intervention designed to help newly identified autistic adults integrate this understanding into their lives in an empowering and meaningful way.

Session 1: Processing the Assessment Experience & First Steps

  • Exploring the assessment journey: Validating emotions around the process, particularly if the experience was medicalized or deficit-focused.
  • Understanding autism through a neuro-affirming lens: Reframing autism as a natural and valuable neurotype.
  • Initial reflections on identity: What does this new knowledge shift or confirm about the self?
  • Exploring immediate next steps: Identifying questions, concerns, and priorities moving forward.

Session 2: Life Through a New Lens – Rewriting Your Narrative

  • Reviewing pivotal life moments: Re-examining past experiences through an autistic lens to foster self-compassion and clarity.
  • Unlearning internalized ableism: Recognizing and challenging messages that framed autism negatively.
  • Building a positive autistic identity: Understanding common autistic strengths and celebrating individual uniqueness.

Session 3: Realigning Life to Fit Your Neurology

  • Masking & authenticity: Exploring when, why, and how camouflaging happens, and finding a balance between authenticity and safety.
  • Energy accounting & burnout prevention: Understanding autistic burnout, developing energy regulation strategies, and respecting sensory needs.
  • Self-advocacy skills: Practical ways to advocate for support, accommodations, and a sustainable way of living.

Session 4: Relationships, Disclosure & Community

  • Personal disclosure: Understanding the risks and benefits of sharing your autistic identity in different settings (work, family, social).
  • Navigating relationships: Addressing differences in communication, sensory needs, and expectations within families and workplaces.
  • Connecting with community: Exploring the value of autistic spaces, peer support, and online communities.

Session 5: Strengths, Passions & Next Steps

  • Passions & special interests: Emphasizing their role in regulation, joy, and well-being.
  • Navigating the system: Accessing disability services, workplace accommodations, and reasonable adjustments if needed.
  • Planning for ongoing support: How to continue self-exploration, find neuro-affirming therapy, and maintain momentum beyond these sessions.
